SKILL DEVELOPEMENT PROGRAM

1. Objectives of Skill development:

A)We are struggling with the academia-industry gap for years now. Though the number of colleges has mushroomed, students are not job-ready. They lack the skills that the workplace requires. The program not only wishes for employment but also strives to broaden the mindset of the youth. For actual progress, we need good entrepreneurs and scientists too.

B) It also has provisions for the economic empowerment of the underprivileged youth such as skill loan scheme and aims to mitigate poverty.

C) Through Skill India mission, the government wants the youth to meet both local demand and rank well on a global scale.

2. Context of skill development

Skill development means a process which enables trainees and the working age people to gain access to dexterity, knowledge and ability, career ethics and good working attitude by skill training, establishing skill standards, and other relating activities.

While most of us would agree on the importance of having the right skills, there is often disagreement over what types of skills are right and how they should be produced.

It helps to unpack the skills development process a bit. A worker’s skill set consists of cognitive, soft, and job-specific skills, which are shaped in different ways. What many do not realize is that the foundation that underpins a person’s ability to learn and acquire skills is hardwired in early childhood, and depends on good nutrition, early stimulation, and a safe environment. Attention to early childhood development can increase learning ability and raise wages in adult life.

 3. Determine the need of the workforce

All up skilling journeys start with a demand for skills that will help the business advance. Triggers include changes in strategic focus, the implementation of new technology, or external disrupters like a pandemic. Adapting to these changes often requires new skills.

A large multinational retail company that we’ve worked with quickly grew its presence through multiple acquisitions and mergers. To professionalize HR, all HR business partners (HRBPs) needed to operate at the same, strategic level. This required skills such as business acumen, but also the ability to communicate with data, apply design thinking to develop customer-centric solutions, and leverage storytelling to create impact.

These skills were identified through interviews with senior leadership and HR managers. The result was a clear role description of the HRBP as well as a list of skills and behaviors required to be proficient in the role.

4. Assess the current level of employee skills

The second step is to determine the current level of employee skills. The skills identified in the first step serve as inputs for this assessment. Relevant populations are assessed on their current skill level. This can happen through individual assessment, interviews, or interviews with team managers.

The retail company mentioned earlier found a significant difference in how the HRBP role had evolved in the different subsidiaries. An HRBP in one part of the company could have a much more strategic role and had a different skill set than in another part of the organization.

  1. Evidence of success

Good communication skills are important, both in person and online. The next generation is going to need to excel in these and every now and again this will include having to lead the conversation. As mentioned above, there might be special circumstances to navigate, such as key members of a team who live in different locations.

This is only one of the many scenarios that might mean people will need to be multifaceted and learn how to communicate using new mediums. And with most workplaces using tools like Slack or Skype to communicate within their teams, written communication is a major point. Reading comprehension and writing skills have become crucial skills for the modern student and employee.
